Selena Gomez Social Media Investigation
Selena Gomez is one of the well-known celebrities for her humbleness. Selena is very good at preserving its intercommunicative self to engage with her audiences. She has a well-maintained social media such as Instagram and Twitter, where she is the most active in.
Selena also has millions of social media followers which theoretically, according to Marshall (2010:43), it is impossible for celebrities to communicate with their audiences individually. However, this does not deter her from communicating with her followers. She often posts videos on her Instagram (not for professional sake) to catch up about her public personal self with her followers.
Selena Gomez started her career as a kid’s actress with a bright image. She always maintained her vivid personality for years. However, after she was diagnosed with Lupus in 2015 (INSIDER 2017), she began to open her public private self to raise awareness about her disease and mental health. The audience then immediately responded to her current issue back then. Most of them were supporting Selena and praise her for being brave to open about her health condition.
Selfies on Instagram and other social media often being signaled as a narcissistic turn. However, in Selena’s case, it’s often seen as the immense freedom of expression. This is due to the good public image Selena owns.
Selfies on young people’s Instagram would have no harm if they were posted with good intentions. In the current situation, selfies often perceived as a source of people’s insecurity. People see selfies as what the real person looks like, but they do not realize that those pictures were being selected from tens and hundreds of photos taken, then edited. Nonetheless, people have their privilege to edit their image as much as they want. We, the receiver, are the ones who have to be aware of the issue.
